How to Check Your Active Taxpayer List (ATL) Status: 3 Ways

Introduction

Your Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status directly affects how much withholding tax you pay on everyday transactions — banking, property, vehicles — so it’s worth knowing how to check it yourself rather than assuming you’re on the list because you filed a return at some point. Here are the three ways to check, in under two minutes.

Method 1: FBR’s Online Portal

  1. Go to FBR’s official website (fbr.gov.pk) and open the Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax) page under the online verification section.
  2. Enter your CNIC (without dashes) if you’re checking as an individual, or your NTN if you’re checking a business.
  3. Submit the form.
  4. The system displays whether that CNIC or NTN is currently on the Active Taxpayer List, along with the registered name.

This method is free, doesn’t require logging in or registering, and normally takes well under two minutes.

Method 2: SMS (No Internet Needed)

  1. Open your phone’s messaging app.
  2. For an individual, type: ATL [space] 13-digit CNIC
  3. For an AOP or company, type: ATL [space] 7-digit NTN
  4. Send it to 9966.
  5. You’ll receive a reply confirming your current filing status.

This works on any mobile network across Pakistan without needing a data connection — useful if you want a quick check without opening a browser. Standard SMS charges apply.

Method 3: IRIS Portal Login

If you already have IRIS portal credentials for another reason — filing your return, checking previous submissions — you can also confirm your ATL status from within your logged-in account rather than checking separately. For a quick one-off check, though, the online portal lookup or SMS method (Methods 1 and 2) is usually faster since neither requires logging in.

When Does the ATL Actually Update?

FBR refreshes the Active Taxpayer List weekly, every Sunday, with a new annual ATL published each year shortly after that year’s filing deadline (for Tax Year 2026, that’s expected around 1 October 2026 — see our earlier post on the income tax return deadline). The weekly updates layer on top of that annual list throughout the year — adding taxpayers who filed late, for example — rather than replacing it each time. If you’ve just filed your return, your name typically appears within one to two weeks of the return being successfully processed, reflected in the next weekly update after that. Checking the day after you file and not seeing your name yet doesn’t necessarily mean something went wrong — it may just not have cycled through yet.

What to Do If You’ve Filed but Still Show as Inactive

  • Give it time first. If you filed within the last one to two weeks, wait for the next Sunday update before assuming there’s a problem.
  • Confirm your return was actually accepted, not just submitted — a filing that failed validation won’t add you to the ATL even though you attempted it.
  • If you filed after the deadline, remember that late filers are only added to the ATL after paying the surcharge under Section 182A — simply filing late isn’t enough on its own to restore your status.
  • If enough time has passed and you’re still not showing up, that’s worth raising with a tax advisor or FBR directly rather than continuing to guess.

A Practical Side Note for Business Owners

Individual ATL status is separate from your business’s sales tax digital invoicing compliance, but they tend to go together in practice: business owners who stay on top of one form of FBR compliance — like issuing properly validated digital invoices year-round through a platform such as FBR Digital Invoices — generally find their income tax filing, and by extension their ATL status, easier to keep current too, simply because the underlying records are already organized.

FAQ

Is checking my ATL status free? Yes, checking through the online portal or IRIS is free. SMS checks incur standard network messaging charges only.

Do I need to be registered or logged in to check via the portal? No — the online ATL check doesn’t require registration or login, just your CNIC or NTN.

I filed my return three days ago and I’m not on the list yet — is that a problem? Not necessarily. The ATL updates weekly on Sundays, and it can take one to two weeks after a successful filing to appear — check again after the next update before assuming an issue.

Can a business check its ATL status the same way an individual does? Yes, using the same three methods, but with the business’s NTN instead of a personal CNIC.

Conclusion

Checking your ATL status takes a couple of minutes through any of these three methods — the online portal for a no-login check, SMS if you don’t have data access, or IRIS if you’re already logged in. The one thing worth remembering is that the list updates weekly, not instantly, so a recent filing may not show up immediately. If it’s been longer than a couple of weeks and you’re still not appearing, that’s the point to follow up rather than keep waiting.
